When I saw this cabin by Olle Lundberg of Lundberg Design (over at Wanken), I immediately wanted to share. There is a wealth of amazing modern architecture to see on the web, and as beautiful as much of it is, I often feel a bit alienated by the cold/hard lines and emptiness of the space and design. I realize that this characteristic is what makes those structures unique and almost sculptural, I just have trouble picturing myself existing within them.

But Lundberg's Cazadero, California, cabin is an example of cooperative coexistence. It has the structure and lines of modern architecture, the open spaces and large windows, and the efficient use of space, but it also has a warmth and homeyness to it. The wood tones, the occasional unfinished edge and the willingness to exist in its surroundings make this cabin feel like it would work as a cozy and well-designed home, and the accessories add an unexpected touch of folk and comfort to geometric structure.

Perhaps the most intriguing part of the space is the large pool. It is, in fact, as big as it looks and used to be a water tank for livestock. "At 25-feet diameter and 14-feet deep it provides a wonderful black hole of water, particularly in a full moon."

According to Lundberg, most of the project was built using reclaimed materials from various projects over the years. The windows are all steel sash from 5 different remodel projects. The exterior siding is reclaimed redwood, and

the interior walls are thin strips of Montana white pine. The bed cantilevers out over the loft edge to provide some extra space upstairs, and "would not be good for someone with vertigo."

"Some elements are custom designed for the cabin, such as the firewood holder. But many of the pieces are rejects from other projects, like the coffee table that was designed for the Diva Hotel (it has a flaw in the casting). The entire project has been built by the office and myself over the years (big food parties tend to help), and continues to serve as a source of education and inspiration for the entire office."
